Introduction

Azumanga Daioh is relatively new anime series based on a small comic strip by Azuma Kiyohiko. What does the name mean? Nothing, really. Daioh translates to great king, and azumanga isn't even a word. But azuma + manga = azumanga, so there you have it!

What makes Azumanga Daioh unique is that it doesn't really have a plot. The series is basically about a group of girls and their daily high school experiences, from cultural festivals, to summer vacations. There is no on-going storyline or anything like that. Most of the events that occur are pretty random. Azumanga could be called the Seinfeld of anime. It's about the every day.

How could this possibly be interesting, you ask? An anime with no plot? It's all about the characters. Each has their own unique personality, their own strengths (except Osaka), and their own quirks, which you grow to love very quickly.

In addition, Azumanga Daioh can be downright hilarious at times. From Osaka's wacky daydreams, to Tomo's wild outbursts, you're guaranteed many good laughs in each episode.

Despite all of this, Azumanga definitely isn't for everyone. If you have to have a plot/storyline, you're probably not interested. Also, many of the jokes revolve around Japanese culture and traditions, so if you're not up on that, you probably won't be amused.

Personally, I love Azumanga Daioh (obviously). I will admit that I don't get all of the jokes, and the lack of plot almost turned me off in the beginning, but I'm extremely glad I gave the series a chance. If you get into it, it's well worth your time, and it will leave you with a silly smile on your face. Who knows, you may find yourself making a fansite dedicated to it.. ^_~
